How a Chinese Metropolis Entwines its Past into Modern Living

Check-in Asia’s Amy Fabris-Shi charts Hangzhou’s redefining 21st-century moments.

At Check-in Asia, we’ve been analysing business and lifestyle developments in China’s cherished tourism city of Hangzhou for almost 15 years. During our numerous trips to this beguiling ‘Lake City,’ we’ve curated guides to its most intriguing experiences and stories for tourism boards, travel magazines and luxury hotels, and monitored its growth as a MICE destination.

In a lead feature for DestinAsian magazine (Oct/Nov 2017), Check-in Asia Director Amy Fabris-Shi jumped on a bullet train from Shanghai to report on Hangzhou’s redefining 21st-century moments.

In time for hosting the G20 Summit in September 2016, Hangzhou completed an entire new CBD beside the Qiantang River, including a streamlined transport system and iconic municipal buildings. It also welcomed gorgeous new hotels, such as Park Hyatt Hangzhou and Midtown Shangri-La Hangzhou, and sophisticated lifestyle and entertainment enclaves, adding renewed lustre to touring Hangzhou’s evocative historic sites – which remain gloriously untouched by city planners.

Our 8-page DestinAsian feature story looks at several aspects of Hangzhou’s new lifestyle spirit, from its chicest new places to stay and dine to a French-Chinese skincare brand utilising the powerful antioxidant benefits of local Longjing tea, and sleek interactive museums preserving ancient Hangzhou crafts.

Check out some of the intriguing Hangzhou people and stories we encountered during our research here, and email us if you’d like to read the full DestinAsian story.
